This weekend saw the beginning of of the Chuseok long weekend. For many of the the foreign residents here in Gwangju this means that we will spend some extra time not doing much, maybe taking a day trip or enjoying good food and drink with friends.
I have lived in Korea for many years and have experienced the change of travel during the Chuseok holiday firsthand. My first attempt at travel during the holiday resulted in an eighteen hour trip from south of Seoul to Gwangju. There was another three hour leg stuck on the end of the journey. All in all, an extremely long and frustrating trip.
Since that time, we have seen numerous improvements made to infrastructure allowing faster, safer and more comfortable travel throughout Korea. No longer are the holidays a chance to sit and enjoy the beauty of the Korean countryside from a car or a crowded bus. To get a feeling of just how much things have improved the following photos show some of the scenes that you could have expected to see during the 1970s and 1980s.

오랫동안 한국에서 살았다는 이 외국인은 자신의 경험을 이야기하며, 과거와 많이 달라진 현재의 모습을 이야기 하고 있습니다.
서울에서 광주까지 18시간이나 걸리고, 3시간동안이나 발이 묶이기도 한 정말적인 여행이었지만, 지금은 교통환경이 개선이 이루어져 더이상 혼잡한 버스 등에 앉아 한국 시골의 아름다움을 즐길수 있는 기회는 없다고 다소 아쉬움을 표현하고 있습니다.
사진으로 보는 1970년대, 혹은 1980년대 초반으로보이는 추석 풍경이 다소 이채롭습니다.
고향을 찾기 위해 기차와 버스 창문으로 올라가는 모습, 인파에 밀려 행여 잃을세라 가방들을 높이 들고 모습도 보입니다.
서울역 앞과 인근 지하철은 기차를 기다리는 사람들로 인산인해를 이루고 있습니다.
기본적인 노동권 조차도 지켜지지 않던시절, 고향을 떠나 10시간 넘게 일을해가며 가족을 위해
일했던 저 사진속 주인공인들은 지금 어디서 무엇을 하고 있을까요.
